Do it, you won't...or will you?

My boys had a saying in high school which irritated me no end at the time….”Do it, you won’t” (always said sarcastically in the way of teenage boys). Years have gone by, and I now think of that phrase when I am not getting stuff done because, actually, it can be true!

How many times do you go into a shop or walk through a show, give a big sigh, and say “I love these fabrics and yarns, but I have so much stash I bought a while ago or that I inherited from my mother or grandmother that I may never be able to buy fabrics or yarn  again”. I know I have a lot of times! If you have been quilting or knitting for a  while, you have a stash. Are there fabrics or yarns in your stash – from whatever source – that cause you to cringe when you see them ? Your quilting or knitting life is too short to clutter it with things that you know you will never use. Maybe your tastes have changed. Maybe you inherited rooms of stash (ask Debi next time you are in the shop how much she inherited!). Maybe there are colors and styles that are just not you. Here is a challenge - go through your stash and pull fabrics or yarns that you truly know you will never ever in your wildest dreams use. Hold on to those that have sentimental value but get rid of the rest - donate to a local group that makes charity quilts, hold a garage sale, and some may just need to be thrown away. Clean out and make room for pretty fabrics and yarn that make YOU happy and YOU will use.

Do it, you won’t….or will you?

If you do, post an update on our FB site or send a quick few words to info@peaktopeakstitching.com and let us know how it goes and I will add some updates in a later newsletter.

‘Tis the season for gift giving and last minute gift making. Another use for stash fabrics can be to make gift bags – they are recyclable – and can be made to fit the right size.

We have beginner friendly kits in for simple throws including Little Donkey Winter Warmth Kit, Arctic Fun Kit, White Linen Holiday kit, and Cardinal Christmas (panels, apron panels, and more) We also now have a line of flannels which make wonderful backings.

Other quick to make gifts can include simply quilting fabric, cutting and binding it to make easy placemats. You can make dinner napkins out of 2 FQs. A favorite block or a panel can be made into a simple wall-hanging and so on. Come into the store or give us a call and we can help you with ideas or to select fabrics (we have holiday fabrics in-stock).

In from Focus on Fabrics are a bunch of new panels which can easily bring a bit of mountain life into your quilting. A couple of my new favorites are the bobcat and another is the Rufous hummingbird.

For you knitters or crocheters, easy gifts can be simple mug rugs, beanies, or basic narrow scarves (make them in fingering weight yarn for an accessory to a favorite top). Think get it done, not fancy stitches!

To help with your gift giving, check out the Sew a Rope Basket class on November 16th and the Small Projects Quickie Retreat (pillowcase, hexie table centerpiece, placemats) on December 16th. Both of these will have you going home with gifts for you or for another.

Our classroom is open every Wednesday and most other days (check first if it is not a Wednesday) if you want to drop in and just sit and stitch.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have an idea for a retreat or a class you would like to see. Send an email to info@peaktopeakstitching.com with your thoughts!
