Light
Compare the picture I took this morning with the picture from last spring!
Light is the “natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible”. As fall fast approaches here in the mountains, the “colors” of late afternoon light soften, and leaves, shrubs, and grasses start to change colors, especially at the higher altitudes. What was a stark brown or gray in the mountains, now takes on a different shading. Have you walked under a tree with changing leaves on a bright fall day? The air itself seems to shimmer with gold or rose colored light by virtue of the light coming through the colorful leaves. When you walked under that tree in the summer, the light seemed less colorful, right?
When looking at fabric or yarn colors, consider the light on the item. Is the light a sharp fluorescent? Is the fabric or yarn in shadow (like on a bottom shelf)? Is warm sunlight shining in a window on your item? While most stores try to be well lit, there are always shadows and variations of light intensity and these variations impact the color you see. When selecting fabrics or yarns for a project, gather your options from the racks or shelves and lay them all under the same lighting before making a final selection. Light matters!
I know a few weeks have passed since the last newsletter. Sorry! In the meantime, we have had a lot of colorful fabric collections come in. Check them out on our website or stop in the store and check out new arrivals!
The “Silent Lake” collection from Northcott will draw you in. The fall colors of trees, rocks, and a beautiful lake scene are perfect for this time of the year. The aspen trees with hints of pastel colors are a different take on an aspen grove! There is also a wide back with this collection. A lot of these fabrics will work well in landscape art quilts.
The “Enchanted Forest” wild animal collection is new from the Dan Morris Group and QT Fabrics. The animals are done in rich colors in quite an artistic style!
Also from QT Fabrics are fabrics from “The Wonder of Nature”. For a quick and easy quilt that immerses you in the wild, check this panel and blender fabric out.
Even though fall is coming, it is fun to consider flowers from the area in fall colors. Think “Floribunda” by Moda – these are wonderful in color and detail and will be fun to work with.
Continuing the wildflower theme, we brought in two fabrics from Clothworks that have beautiful, soft toned wildflowers. These fabrics can work great as borders or as standalone blocks!
Finally, a couple of cool new additions to Northcott’s Solitude Naturescapes collection.
Happy stitching and happy start of fall!
