Shades of Color

Beauty in the skies! This is the time of the year when clouds add a backdrop to the mountains whether wispy threads or heavy thunderclouds. Libby from our staff captured this rainbow out her window this morning!

Wherever you live, be it in a city, a suburb, or a rural area, I would like to challenge you to think about shades. Look at an area up close, from a few feet away, or far away. Pick a color and then see how many shades (color variations) of that color you can see in your “view frame”. Look at how shadows big and small impact the color you see. When you are choosing fabrics for a quilt, consider how many shades of a color are out there and how layering shades can change how your project looks. This is also especially true of landscape art quilts. Enjoy looking at the micro and macro world around you and let it fuel your creativity! How many shades of green can you see in this picture?

The first block in our Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) series showcasing the flora and fauna of the Rockies will be available in the store and online for shipping on Tuesday, July 2nd. Block 1 is a Stellar’s Jay – it will be available as a kit and as a pattern. Going forward, a new block will be released on the first Tuesday of each month. These 12” x 12” blocks are designed by Front Range Designer Lori Jonker. Each pattern includes a link to a YouTube video made by Lori that includes tips specific to that block as well as a link to a basic introduction to Foundation Paper Piecing. (Last call to join our FPP Block of the Month – as part of the BOM, you will get the blocks 1 month ahead of their release in the store, the pattern will be printed on both regular printing paper as well as on Foundation Paper Printing paper, and you will also get a 12” Add-a-Quarter ruler which is very helpful when doing FPP. On July 15th, the BOM will close to new members. Think about it – our BOM members are receiving Block 2 next Tuesday, but it will not be available for purchase until August!)

Charley Harper fans – we have some new Charley Harper fabrics in the store this week. We are also in the process of starting to create the kits for the September 14th Quickie 1-day Retreat Charley Harper Rocky Mountain Quilt. This retreat will be in person and can be hosted on zoom if you cannot make it to Estes Park in person – please give us a call and let us know if you would like to participate online!
